About us

We turn sustainability into strategy.

For over two decades, we’ve worked at the intersection of sustainability, regulation, and the systems that turn policy into practice. Today, our work centres on the EPD ecosystem , and on helping every part of it do the work that comes next.
I’m Susanne Volz, founder of Improving Sustainability. For nearly twenty years, I’ve worked at the intersection of sustainability, product development, and regulation, from Life Cycle Assessments and circular design to environmental policy.

The thread through all of it has been the same: how do we move from understanding sustainability to actually doing it? I founded this company to help businesses use EPDs as a strategic tool: for clarity, better products, and long-term competitiveness in a fast-moving market.

My background combines law, environmental science, as well as sustainability and climate risk management. But what ties it all together is system innovation: working out how to act well inside systems that are still changing and finding their form, and how to make sound decisions before everything is certain. That’s most of what implementing EPD into your everyday business actually asks of you right now, and it’s what I can help you do.

We work across the whole EPD ecosystem

We see EPDs not just as a collection of data. They are strategic tools. Decision-making maps. A chance to understand your product on a deeper level and shape a more resilient business for the future. We’re here to help you see what’s behind the data, and how to use it to grow stronger, greener, and smarter.

EPDs don’t exist in isolation. They’re a means to a larger end: a more sustainable and resilient economy. But EPDs are only meaningful when the stakeholders of a system work together. When one part of the system is under pressure, the others feel it. When one part is built well, the others benefit.

Working across the stakeholders in a system is how we’ve come to understand the perspective of each: what manufacturers need, what programme operators are managing, and what associations are being asked to deliver. That perspective shapes every project we work on.

Two experts. One shared goal.

We’re the kind of team that wants to see what’s coming next and figure out how to work with it. We go about problems by exploring them properly before solving them, and we bring clients into that process rather than handing back a finished answer.

And we believe the work matters: EPDs are how the construction industry’s environmental impact gets measured and managed, and that’s worth doing well.

“An EPD isn’t just a document — it’s a mirror for your product and a map for your next move. Done right, it shows you where you stand today and where you can grow tomorrow.”

Philipp Dumproff

EPD Expert, LCA Partitioner, Two-wheeler
“EPD creation is not about the results you achieve, but the knowledge you gain along the way to make your own product better and, above all, more sustainable in the future.”

What we believe in

We see EPDs not just as a collection of data. They are strategic tools. Decision-making maps. A chance to understand your product on a deeper level and shape a more resilient business for the future. We’re here to help you see what’s behind the data — and how to use it to grow stronger, greener, and smarter.

Would like to join the team?

We’re not currently hiring. But the EPD industry is growing, and we’ll be looking for more people soon. If working alongside our team on work that actually matters in the sustainability sector is something you’d want to do, we’d be glad to hear from you when the moment is right.

Drop us a line at info@improving-sustainability.com and tell us a bit about yourself. We’ll keep it on file, and we’ll be in touch when something opens up that might be a fit.

Let’s start with a conversation.

Whether you’re a manufacturer, programme operator, or association — or just curious whether we’d be useful to you — the right first step is a conversation. No pitch, no pressure. Tell us what’s on your desk and we’ll give you our honest read.
